Prevalence

Approximately 5.3 million people in the United
States—a little more than 2% of the population— currently
live with disabilities resulting from brain
injury.

Every 15 seconds one person in the United States
sustains a brain injury.

One million people are treated for traumatic
brain injury and released from hospital emergency
rooms each year.
•
Each year 230,000 individuals are hospitalized
with traumatic brain injuries and survive.
•
80,000 Americans annually experience the onset
of long-term disabilities following a traumatic
brain injury.
Age at Injury
Risk of traumatic brain injury is highest in
adolescents, young adults and adults older
than 75 years.
Causes
Motor vehicle crashes account for 50% of all
traumatic brain injuries. Falls are the second
leading cause and the most prevalent cause
among the elderly. Violence, particularly from
firearms, ranks third.
Gender
Men are twice as likely to experience a traumatic
brain injury as women.
Cost
Traumatic brain injuries cost an estimated
$48.3 billion annually in the United States.
Hospitalization accounts for $31.7 billion.
Fatal brain injuries cost the nation $16.6
billion each year. These figures reflect only
hospital costs. We have no estimates yet on
the additional costs of rehabilitation, lost
wages and impact on the family.
